I am a second generation Fort Lauderdale native. Born right here at Holy Cross Hospital the same year that The Ford Motor Company introduced the Edsel. The Edsel was named in honor of the only son of Henry and Clara Ford. I too was named in honor of my father as we celebrated our birthdays together on the same day. Growing up in Wilton Manors back in the day when milk was still delivered, door to door, and Mary Macintosh ran a diaper cleaning & delivery & service is a stark contrast to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Area we know and live in today. I grew up exploring every navigable waterway from the Intracoastal Waterway to the dike surrounding the everglades just west of the Sawgrass Expressway. Our area takes on a whole new perspective when viewed from the waterways. My grandfather made his last passage on the “Passing Thru” which was the fastest of the lake boats between Downtown Fort Lauderdale and Lake Okeechobee back on Christmas Eve of 1921 After Graduating a “Flying L” from Fort Lauderdale High School’s Class of “75” I worked construction jobs on either swimming pools or residential homes. And after a decade of living the single life in the go-go 70’s & 80’s I found myself married and living in New England working for the oldest swimming pool builder in the country. Fairfield Connecticut was quite a change from the life that I had known in Florida and I quickly learned that in order to survive and raise a family I need to make serious money. I met the challenge and started a mason contracting company building fireplaces and brick facing commercial buildings. Soon I was investing the profits of the company into purchasing building lots and began building speculative homes for sale. I went back to school and got my Connecticut Real Estate License which I held for many years until the housing market deteriorated and land became too costly or scarce to continue a viable business. I returned to Fort Lauderdale in 2001 and immediately went back into construction as a Senior Project Manager for a prominent local homebuilder. My greatest personal satisfaction was realized on the day of closing while taking the new home buyers for their final walkthrough prior to closing. For me, that is when the rubber meets the road. Everything prior to that moment is merely a process and when the process is complete and new owners take possession of their new home it truly is a testament to customer satisfaction. Which actually is what it is really all about! Right?
